BC Law officially kicked off Diversity Month with the “Taste of Diversity.” The event offers an opportunity for students to interact and sample food from the different affinity groups. Prior to the event, LSA President Nirav Bhatt ’16 said, “Every year students are excited for the tasty food and thought-provoking conversations that arise during the buffet style event. I’m looking forward to it!” Indeed, it’s an event that students have been talking about for weeks leading up to it. We all know students love free food, especially quality food!
The wide-ranging selection included: dumplings and California rolls by the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA); empanadas and croquetas by the Latin American Law Students Association (LALSA); delicious Jamaican patties by the Black Law Students Association (BLSA); an assortment of falafel, hummus, and baba ghanoush by the Middle Eastern Law Students Association (MELSA); and palak paneer, basmati rice, and chicken tikka by the South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA); just to name a few!
Along with delicious ethnic foods, the room was filled with various genres of music representing the cultures and groups at the event. Photos of each dish were presented on a PowerPoint screen in the room so as to entice and describe the meals each student ate.
The Taste of Diversity is the first of 4 events that gives students the opportunity to explore racial and religious issues arising in our society today. Nirav Bhatt described the importance of this month:
“For Diversity Month this year, LSA and the affinity groups have strived to create programming that engenders broader student engagement. We focused on a mission to put forth events that promote productive, healthy dialogue with a diversity of opinion and inclusion of everyone. Diversity Month at BC Law is important because it allows for the entire student body to celebrate and appreciate their peers’ diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds.”
