One Size Does Not Fit All: The 2L Summer Job Search 

You might be familiar with the term “two roads diverged in a yellow wood.” The poem, written by Robert Frost, reflects on the ways different choices can lead to different journeys and different destinations. 

If – like me – the journey you’re contemplating is the 2L summer job search for Big Law firms, it’s less two roads diverging in a yellow wood, and more one of those massive highway interchanges – where it feels like there’s about 8 different paths you could take, all of them go somewhere different, you can’t make out any of the road signs, and it’s all happening at about 80 miles per hour. 


What firms are you looking at? What part of the country? Do you want a big firm? A small firm? A small office in a big firm? A small practice area in a big office in a big firm? A big practice area in a big office in a small firm? Some other ungodly combination thereof? 

And then – practice areas, which are different from industries. Litigation or corporate? Corporate litigation? Complex commercial litigation? Transactional? Disputes? A specific area of litigation? A specific area of transactions? Do you want to decide on your practice group as a summer associate? Anything involving technology? Anything involving labor and employment? What about real estate? Are you planning to clerk? Are you interested in pro bono? 

And that’s just if you know you want to do a Big Law Summer. For example, many of my friends are interested in Big Law, but also want to explore public interest or government jobs. 

So, you know, no stress. 

At the same time, as you seek out people for advice – older students, mentors, professors, CSO, practicing attorneys and so on – you find that while the advice is helpful and based on experience, it often contradicts. Some people love networking, others emphatically do not, some people were sending out applications in March and others waited until after spring semester finals. 

While it all seems confusing, and as mentioned above, there are multiple different paths, I’ve come to understand that multiple different paths are kind of the point. There is no one-size-fits-all plan for 2L recruitment. 

For example, I plan on returning to California after graduation. I’m from San Diego, and I hope to begin my legal practice in Southern California – and definitely want to be a summer associate in a Southern California office. As such, my process looks a little different than many of my peers. 

Whereas my classmates can meet attorneys for coffee within the city of Boston, I often connect with attorneys in Southern California via Zoom. While there are certainly more alums from BC law in Boston than in San Diego, the alumni network in California have all been open and willing to connect and talk about their experiences as various firms. Additionally, I can reach out to attorneys who attended the same undergraduate school as me, or attended my undergraduate school for law school and vice versa. When I attend events in Boston, my goals are to generally understand the culture of a firm and show interest to recruiters who can hopefully connect me with offices in San Diego and Los Angeles. 

Many firms have virtual events – where you can connect with attorneys across the country. Furthermore, legal recruiters are a great way to start getting connected with an office. 

And if you’re not sure where to start, Boston College has some great resources to put you on the path that is right for you: 

  1. The Career Services Office: The Career Services Office has the benefit of knowing how the 2L job search is going on a macro level – they talk to a variety of students, and track job offers, acceptances, and interviews. Additionally, meeting with CSO can help you create a plan that does fit you, looking at a variety of different factors, including market, practice area, location and application timelines. They also know BC grads personally and can connect you with alumni who might be particularly helpful to your search.
  1. 2L and 3L Students: Speaking to 2Ls is helpful because their application process – hopefully – will be the most similar to the current application process. 2Ls can offer valuable advice on what worked and what didn’t when applying to firms. 3Ls have worked in the firm as a summer associate — they offer great insight into firm culture. Additionally, it can feel easier to ask questions to 3Ls instead of cold emailing an Associate or recruiter.
  1. Firm Prospects, Vault, Chambers Associate and other web pages: In my search for out-of-state firms, these websites have been invaluable. First, they’re a great way to find firms in different cities. Additionally, the websites will break down practice areas, explain which of the firm’s offices host summer programs, and provide insight into firm culture. 
  2. Career Services Office Big Law Recruiting Website: CSO created a website tailored to the class of 2027 2L job search. Students can see historic GPA data, dates that firm portals open, and access resources such as sample cover letters.

In New Magazine Issue, Our Community Shines Through

BC Law Magazine has been writing about what makes our community special for over thirty years. I always look forward to a new issue, and the Winter 2025 edition is full of stories of alumni, faculty, and students doing pretty amazing work that speaks to our mission of delivering justice all over the world.

I found the cover story, “Then Came the Reckoning,” particularly compelling. It was not an easy read, telling the story of alumna Erica Brody fighting for justice for a group of children abused by their foster parents, but the results were truly astonishing–literally changing the way the system works in Massachusetts. One of the most frightening things about the case was not just what happened in those foster homes (one in particular over many years), but how the state agency involved in placements actively worked to cover everything up. And until Erica and her team fought for change, the agency was pretty well protected by state law. Well worth the read, but we should offer a trigger warning for depictions of abuse of children.

Four Things to Know for Those Considering Clerking

A judicial law clerk assists a judge in their most important duties: preparing to supervise an oral argument, drafting opinions, and preparing jury instructions. With direct contact from the arbiters of the law, the value of a judicial clerkship cannot be matched. Not only will a judicial clerk’s writing, reading, and analytical skills vastly improve, their network among members of the Bar, other clerks, and judges will also expand.

“They” really do. Maybe it’s the adrenaline rush of 1L that shields you from the 2L crash– but crash you may, come 2L.

Heading into your 2L year, the freedom to choose your schedule is both initially exciting and slightly intimidating. But an abundance of choice in your academic calendar may lead you to oversubscribe to all the offerings of law school after a rigid 1L year hand-picked for optimal doctrinal standardization. Now, there is the expectation that you remember everything you learned during 1L because you are allegedly fluent in legalese, right?

My Answer to ‘Why Did You Go to Law School’

When I walked into my last Critical Perspectives class of the semester this past Monday, written on the board was the question: ‘Why did you go to law school?’ This question was nothing new – law students get asked by family, friends, and most law school applications ask why you want to go to law school – but in class that day, it felt like a very personal one.

Sunday night I was working on my cover letter, as one does on their Sunday evening. As I was writing, I was thinking about all of the experiences and skills I had that might separate me from the hundreds of cover letters that 1Ls across the country will be sending to summer employers. My entire professional life flashed before my eyes: school nights picking up trash after college basketball games, a few summers lifeguarding and babysitting, and that one cashier job at Home Depot. But I landed on my experience last year working for a mass tort litigation firm, where I was a paralegal on the Boy Scouts of America sexual abuse class action case. That role absolutely changed my life in more than a professional sense, and gave me my answer to the question on the board that morning in Critical Perspectives.

Don’t Scroll Past This Article: LinkedIn and Law Students

The feeling is unmistakable. An endless scroll through a LinkedIn carnival of contrived self-promotion and corporate-speak. Each post teeters on the brink of parody. “Thrilled to announce.” “Congrats mate!” “Excited for what’s coming!” You can picture the unseen scorecards flashing behind computer screens: applause, confetti, sympathy. And there you are, shrinking into the shadows, your own achievements contorted into trivialities.

For law students, this pressure is not just an unwelcome intrusion; it often feels imperative. If networking is our currency, LinkedIn is our trading floor. But is it a necessary evil, or just some Kantian illusion that we’ve convinced ourselves is indispensable to our profession?

BC Eagles or Butterflies? I Say Both 

Lately, law school feels like I am slowly emerging from the eye of a storm, armed with the certainty of its chaotic whirlwinds but anxious about how I will forge a path through it. As a 1L, the uptick in unfamiliar networking events and professional panels amidst the first-time memos and midterms makes the near future seem especially tumultuous. Many of my classmates surely feel the same. While I cannot stop the inevitability of our chaotic law school eras, I can offer some existential insight on navigating them based on my conveniently related interest in the butterfly effect.

The butterfly effect stems from the scientific study of chaos theory, which explains limitations to predictions in dynamic systems seemingly governed by deterministic laws. It captures how small changes in initial conditions within one area of a dynamic system can result in substantial effects in another. Explained metaphorically, this means that the mere flap of wings from a butterfly in one area of the world could cause a tornado elsewhere—or it could not.

Does a “Not Real Job” On a Resume Mean Anything? Yes, and Here’s Why.

The fall feels like the time of year everyone works on their resumes. Along with the changing New England leaves and pumpkin spice lattes, current and prospective law students all partake in a seasonal refresh after a busy summer. 

It was before one of these seasonal resume workshops I heard a common talking point. 

“Oh I’ve never had a real job.” 

“Is it bad that I have no political work on my resume?” 

“I was stuck working retail during the pandemic.”

This is an anxiety that many, if not all, law students have encountered at some point. Maybe it was during our application process, or maybe it’s manifesting now. We fear our experiences are not relevant to this field. Our skills from assisting with college orientation to dishwashing are not applicable to being an attorney.

Past Experience Pays Off: How A Podcasting Career Prepared Me For 1L

A little more than four years ago, I found myself in the producer’s chair, attempting to put together my first podcast for Wondery Media. The episode centered around a mystery story, one that remains unsolved. It was no unsolved murder or whodunit yarn, but instead a tale about what happened to a 7-foot 900 lbs bronze statue of Joe Paterno, the disgraced former-head football coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The statue disappeared in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal that rocked the State College community back in 2011 and led to Paterno’s firing; a previously unbelievable outcome for a coach who at that time led the NCAA in career victories. The whereabouts of the statue remain unknown, and while that mystery remained, what became clear to me as I bumbled my way through putting that story together was just how little I knew about what an adequate producer does every day.

It Takes a Village: Why Mentorship is So Important

Today, law students are primarily sculpted in classrooms, with the chances for out-of-class experience strewn throughout summer work, school clinics, and externships. But becoming a lawyer in the U.S. was originally premised on the experience of apprenticing. Direct observation, hands-on work, with a touch of baptism-by-fire-shaped lawyers. On a broader level, apprenticing was premised on mentorship. Though law students must endure the modern right of passage that is the dreaded 1L year spent in structured doctrinals, mentorship has remained a mainstay of a legal education. 

“Networking” is a daunting word for most in the professional world and known all too well by those in the legal field. Law students understand early on that building a network is a crucial part of forming their careers. But mentorship is just as important as – and in fact both encompasses the nature of and is an expansion of – networking. As a remnant of early legal education, having mentors from the moment you start law school until your last day of retirement at that fancy law firm you started is vital to success in the legal field. Having a network is important, but having people in your corner to guide the ship that is your career journey is what makes your network rich.
