3L is Finally Here: Why This One is so Special

Thank goodness the library doesn’t issue noise complaints on the first day of school. 

My friends and I — running on the high of eating a grocery store salad in the Yellow Room — skipped to the fourth floor of the library. There, we each took turns accidentally playing Instagram Reels on full volume. Like clockwork, anxious 1L’s flooded the library atrium at 3:00 p.m., muttering reflections about their inaugural lectures and cold calls to new friends. 

There’s nothing like the first day of 3L — or as my friends and I have dubbed it, “senior year.” Novelty accompanies familiarity: freshly-painted Stuart Hall walls and large-scale portraits dot the paths we’ve spent pacing between classes. Somehow, Legal Grounds manages to brew better coffee every year. And even the light streaming through the library’s fourth floor windows cuts different shadows on the books and reports lining the shelves.

These New BC Law Employment Numbers are Crazy Good

Numbers talk. 

BC Law’s Career Services office submitted its employment data to the American Bar Association this past month. Of a class of 243 students, 239 (or 97.9%) were employed, with 96.7% in a full-time, long-term, bar-passage required or JD advantage position.

72% were employed in law firms, and 22% were employed in positions in government, public interest, or a judicial clerkship. Massachusetts was the most popular destination for students post-graduation, with New York and California following behind.

The #1 Reason Dean Lienau Chose BC

In a recent TikTok post, Dean Odette Lienau said community was the number one reason driving her decision to join Boston College Law School. 

The Dean is in good company, with hundreds of current students – and thousands of alumni – sharing that belief. 

As I navigated my own law school decision process, I heard that word “community” repeated across all the conversations I had with current students. It was difficult for me, as a prospective student, to grasp critically why community was such an important pillar of the law school experience.

The Law Student Association is selling Halloween wristbands, so Spooky Season is officially upon us. If you’re scrambling for last-minute costume ideas, have no fear. These are classroom and bar crawl appropriate outfits that will set you apart from everyone else who decides to be Elle Woods or a Supreme Court Justice.

  2. 1 Lexis Nexis highlighter in their pocket 
  3. 1 handful of assorted snacks 
  4. 1 Pocket Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (by Lexis, of course)

Stand outside the Law Library with a folding table for maximum costume authenticity. Since you’ll likely have most of these costume materials in your backpack, this costume can be assembled in less than five minutes on your way to class.

Four Ways ‘Suits’ Breaks ABA Rules

This summer, I binge watched eight seasons of “Suits.”

I’m in company alongside millions of others who tallied over 12.8 billion minutes of streaming the Big Law drama across Netflix and Peacock. “Suits” earned a record-breaking second-life this past summer, becoming the most-watched acquired title in Nielson history from June 26 to July 2. It also became the first show to amass over 3 billion minutes watched for seven straight weeks.

It’s slightly sadistic for me to obsess over “Suits” after clocking in hours as a summer associate. But perhaps what’s worse is drawing analogies between “Suits” episodes and Moral Professional Responsibility hypotheticals.

Each February, The Law Student Association holds a beloved annual tradition at BC Law: ski trip. Dozens of students head to the mountains in Killington, Vermont, to bunk up together in condos and hit the slopes before finding great restaurants and bars at night to socialize.

How to Leverage Social Media as Your Professional Brand

You can’t BeReal if you’re in law school. 

Wipe your social media — make a pseudo Instagram handle, private your Twitter, and maybe even delete your Facebook if you’re feeling up to it. This is the advice commonly distributed to incoming law students and applicants alike across online law school forums. 

This advice is understandable these days, since employers Google everything, and law students have character and fitness standards to follow in order to be eligible to graduate and take the bar. This privatization movement strikes at the heart of #LawTok, though. 

#LawTok is a TikTok hashtag categorizing videos dedicated about — you guessed it — the legal field. #LawTok videos range from videos about navigating On Campus Interviews, networking tips, the latest Supreme Court case to hit the docket, and more. #LawTok boasts 1.7 billion views as of this article’s publication.
