Name: Carlos Robles-Cruz

Hometown: Puerto Rico

Educational Background: B.S., Finance and Accounting, Boston College, Carroll School of Management; M.S., Accounting, Boston College, Carroll School of Management

What did you do before coming to law school?

I worked for several years. Right after college, I worked at PwC in their NYC office, focusing on tax consulting. I later joined the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico as a Senior Associate to work in Puerto Rico’s (PR) financial restructuring process. In the months leading up to law school, I took a month-long trip to Japan.

Why did you decide to go to law school? And why BC Law?

While working in PR’s financial restructuring, I knew I would apply to law school eventually. I witnessed firsthand the vital role that the law played in addressing complex issues in innovative, effective, and impactful ways. The contributions of diverse critical legal thinkers who worked on the restructuring deal afforded PR a structured pathway out of bankruptcy. Witnessing the attorneys’ work cemented my interest in the law and its pivotal role in serving those in need.

Deciding to attend BC Law was straightforward. In addition to being a top law school in the nation, BC Law prides itself on building an inclusive community to help students thrive. My experience has lived up to that expectation. The professors are knowledgeable and supportive, my classmates are always willing to lend a helping hand, and the alumni network is involved in ensuring a successful launch of your legal career.

How have your past experiences informed your law school experience and future career interests?

My past work experience inevitably shaped my interest in corporate and transactional practice. However, going into law school, I wanted to try out litigation and get a sense of what trial practice and being in the court feels like. I had exposure to the work, and although interesting, I could not override my comfort with the business world.  As a CPA with a financial background, I organically decided to launch my career in transactional law. I’m excited to start my career in the corporate practice as early as this summer when I’ll start my summer associateship position here in Boston.
