What did you do before coming to law school?
Before law school, I spent two years working in faculty support at Stanford Law School to make sure law was the field for me. In my role, I had the opportunity to sit in on classes and lectures with experts from fields ranging from election law to the law of war. I was also able to try my hand at legal research and editing legal scholarship and found I loved it all.
Why did you decide to go to law school? And why BC Law?
Since I was a kid, I have had a fascination with the law and this living thing that we’ve created to govern our interactions as a society but is so seldom understood by those living under its rule. This fascination was reinforced when my love for history led me into a human rights minor, which showed me just how powerful a vehicle for justice and change the law can be. After thoroughly enjoying being immersed in the diverse work of the faculty I supported in my role at SLS, I knew my interest in the law ran deep and law school was the right choice.
I chose BC Law for its combination of strong academics and reputation as a collaborative and collegial institution—which I am so happy to report is accurate! I played softball in undergrad and have found that a team environment is where I do my best work, and BC has surely delivered on that aspect. I feel very fortunate to have professors, peers, and true friends at BC Law to support me.
How have your past experiences informed your law school experience and future career interests?
Growing up in a small, isolated rural community on a sugar beet farm in Michigan and moving to the Bay Area taught me to be a curious, active listener who constantly challenges my own perceptions and opinions. I think this approach to academics and my professional life has allowed me to follow my interests in different areas of law—from special purpose acquisition companies to the human rights impacts of the renewable energy transition. For example, I am honored to have the opportunity to present a report on protecting human rights of Indigenous communities through environmental litigation with my brilliant classmates, Juan Curbelo and Sangeeta Kishore, at The Ibero-American University in Mexico City this April. I look forward to seeing where this takes me in my career and to using these experiences to become a more well-rounded attorney!
Sangeeta Kishore is a second-year student at BC Law and president of the Impact blog. Contact her at kishorsa@bc.edu.
