One Genuinely Good Thing: The PILF Auction

If you’ve ever watched The Good Place, you know how hard it is to do a genuinely good thing. And for those of you who haven’t seen the show…it’s hard. Really, really hard. Because the world just doesn’t work that way. Neither does goodness. A genuinely good thing is like the perfect seating chart at a wedding; it doesn’t exist. Or if it does, only in theory, and never in practice.

But…

I have a genuinely good thing for you. A top-to-bottom, high-quality, solid gold good thing. No strings, caveats, codicils, amendments, addendums, or restrictions. Just a good thing; and a good time. A Night Of Jazz. Why? Because A Night Of Jazz is the theme for the 36th annual Public Interest Law Foundation auction in support of PILF’s summer stipends program, and that is a genuinely good thing.

I was a recipient last year of a PILF summer stipend. I spent the money on all kinds of stuff: constructing fact patterns, document review, a few evidentiary hearings. Some of it was spent on case law research. A lot of it was spent on writing. Ok, most of it was spent on writing. But on Fridays, the magistrates would invite the interns out to lunch, and throughout the summer we were given field trips, writing seminars, and some homemade jam. It was a good way to spend the summer. It was a great way to spend money.

Because in the end, that is how the money is spent. PILF summer stipends support the work of an administrative appeals court, which is where I interned. It supports the work of the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Department of Labor, or a legal non-profit. Most of all, though, it supports the education and legal development of BC Law students committed to the public ideals that the law embodies.

So to all current students, faculty and staff, alumni & friends: come spend time with your friends and colleagues for A Night of Jazz and support the good work we’re here to do. More details below.

The Public Interest Law Foundation invites students, faculty, and staff to “A Night of Jazz,” its 36th Annual Public Interest Celebration & Auction on Thursday, April 4th from 6-8 p.m. The event takes place on Boston College’s Chestnut Hill Campus in Corcoran Heights (2nd Floor Corcoran Commons), and will include live music as well as live, silent, and online auctions.
